Professional training. Real experience. Unmatched service.

Join CHFD

Start your career in public safety with the Cockrell Hill Fire Department.

Why join CHFD?

The Cockrell Hill Fire Department is not a typical volunteer organization. We are a training ground for future career firefighters and a home for dedicated professionals who want to serve their community. When you join CHFD, you enter a professional environment that mirrors the standards of paid fire departments.

We look for people who are self-motivated, disciplined, and ready to learn. Whether you are already a certified firefighter or EMT or just starting out, there is a place for you here if you are willing to put in the work.

“Serving as a volunteer firefighter is a challenging and rewarding way to be of service to your community, gain experience, or start a career in the fire service.”

Mason G. Williams, Fire Chief

Disqualifying factors

Any of the following will disqualify you. This list does not cover everything. Honesty matters more than a clean record: most past mistakes do not automatically disqualify you, but leaving something out usually does.

Criminal history

  • Convicted of, pleaded guilty or no contest to, or placed on probation or deferred adjudication for any felony (civilian or military).
  • Committed or convicted of a Class A misdemeanor in the last 5 years, or a Class B misdemeanor in the last 2 years.
  • Committed, admitted to, or convicted of 4 or more Class C misdemeanors in the last 10 years, not counting traffic violations.
  • Convicted of DWI in the 5 years before your application date.
  • On probation for any crime when you apply.
  • Under criminal investigation (civilian or military) during the process for conduct that could lead to probation, deferred adjudication, a fine, jail, or prison.

Driving record

  • Any outstanding traffic warrants or pending citations.
  • Currently on probation for DWI or any other traffic offense.
  • Committed or convicted of Failure to Stop and Render Aid in the last 5 years.
  • Committed or convicted of driving with a suspended license in the last 12 months.

Honesty and conduct

  • Conduct that calls into question your integrity, discipline, commitment, or reliability.
  • Leaving out or misstating information about your employment, education, criminal activity, theft from employers, drug use, driving history, or military history.
  • Any false statement about a material fact.

The commitment

Serving with CHFD requires dedication. We invest heavily in you, and in return we expect a commitment to the department and the citizens we serve.

  • 24 hours a month

Active members serve at least 24 hours per month to stay in good standing. Duty shifts, emergency responses, required training, and authorized details count. Missing your hours two months in a row without approval is treated as a resignation.

  • Training meetings

We train together. Members attend at least 80 percent of our regularly scheduled training meetings.

  • Two-year training agreement

If the department pays for a fire academy, EMT, or paramedic course, you agree to serve two years after you are certified, or repay the unforgiven cost. Training agreements are signed before any sponsored training begins.

Selection process

  1. Step 1: Application

Turn in a complete membership application with the notarized Section 19 and the documents listed in Section 18.

    • Your application is checked for completeness and minimum requirements. Incomplete applications are not processed.
    • A resume may be attached, but it does not replace any part of the application.
  2. Step 2: Background investigation

The Cockrell Hill Fire Marshal's Office conducts a full background investigation.

    • If you clear it, you will be called to schedule the Physical Ability Assessment and interview.
  3. Step 3: Physician clearance

Before the assessment, a physician signs the Physician Clearance form (Part 3 of the application) stating you can safely take it.

    • The signed form must be on file with the Fire Marshal's Office before you test.
    • The form asks only whether you are cleared. Do not include any diagnosis or medical records.
  4. Step 4: Physical Ability Assessment

Complete a job-related physical course within a four-minute time limit.

    • Wear athletic clothing. Sign the PAA Waiver (Part 3 of the application) on test day before you start. It does not need to be notarized.
    • Events, in order: hose throw and walk-out, tire flip, ladder raise, roof ventilation, hose roll lift, charged hose line advance, a second tire flip, and hose roll.

Watch the assessment video on YouTube (external site) (linked from the membership application)

  5. Step 5: Oral interview and decision

If you pass the assessment, you interview the same day with a panel of at least one Fire Officer and one firefighter.

    • You get 60 minutes to put equipment away and recover before the interview.
    • The panel sends a recommendation to the Fire Chief within 48 hours. The Fire Chief makes the final decision, and you will be notified within seven days of your interview.
  6. Step 6: Probationary period

Selected candidates serve 12 months as probationary members.

    • You may be required to complete a medical evaluation and drug screen before you start. If you will be certified or licensed through the department, you will be fingerprinted at IdentoGO at your own cost.
    • Probationary members are assessed along the way and complete a final assessment with their shift supervisor and a Fire Officer.
    • Probationary members ride as observers only and do not take an active part on emergency calls until training is complete.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a paid position?

No. CHFD members are unpaid volunteers. Volunteer refers to pay, not skill: fire suppression members hold at least Basic Firefighter certification from TCFP, and medical personnel hold Texas DSHS certifications.

Can I apply if I don't have a fire or EMS credential yet?

Yes, as Operations Support Personnel. Firefighter applicants must hold a TCFP Structural Firefighter Certification or a Texas DSHS EMT-Basic license or higher. All uncertified members serve as Operations Support until they are properly trained and certified.

Will the department pay for my training?

CHFD sponsors eligible members through fire and EMS academies, but sponsorship is not guaranteed. Any sponsorship is set out in a training agreement signed before training begins, and members who receive sponsorship for a major certification agree to serve for two years after completing the course.

How much time does membership take?

Members serve a minimum of 24 hours per month and attend at least 80 percent of scheduled training meetings to remain in good standing. Ask the department how hours are scheduled.

What is the physical ability assessment like?

It is a timed, job-related course that must be completed within four minutes. The application describes each event and links to a video of the assessment. A physician must sign the Physician Clearance form in the application before you can take part.

Will I respond to emergencies right away?

No. New members serve a 12-month probationary period. Probationary members ride as observers only and do not take an active part on emergency calls until their training is complete.

Do I have to list old arrests or charges that were dismissed?

Yes. List every arrest, detention, non-traffic citation, and charge, even if it was dismissed or you received deferred adjudication. You do not have to list records a court has ordered expunged or that are covered by an order of nondisclosure. If you are not sure, contact the Fire Marshal's Office before you turn in your application.

Is there an application deadline?

No application deadline is published. Contact the department if you have questions about timing.

Can I submit my application through this website?

No. This website does not collect applications or personal documents. You can type into the fillable PDF or print it. Return your completed application by email as one scanned PDF that includes the notarized Section 19, in person at City Hall Administration (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), or in person at Cockrell Hill Police Dispatch at any time.

Questions about joining?

The department can answer questions about eligibility, sponsorship, schedules, and submitting your application.
